The Law and Justice Ministry under the Modi Government has made significant strides in judicial reforms and technological modernization:

Technological Transformation

eCourts Mission Mode Project expanded dramatically, with 18,735 District & Subordinate courts computerized.

25 virtual courts established in 20 states to try traffic offenses

99.4% court complexes provided digital connectivity.

Launched eCourts Phase-III with a ₹7,210 crore budget to create a unified, paperless judicial technology platform.

Case Disposal and Infrastructure

Tele-Law expanded to 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats across 766 districts1

Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) scheme extended until March 2026 with ₹1,952 crore allocation

National Mission for Justice Delivery approved with ₹9,000 crore funding for judicial infrastructure improvements.

Legislative Reforms

Repealed 1,486 old and redundant laws

Passed landmark legislations like:

New criminal laws

Mediation Act

Personal Data Protection Act

Election Commissioner appointment law.

Judicial Appointments

Accelerated judicial appointments: Supreme Court judges appointed after May 2023, compared to 22 in the previous two years.

Milestones and achievements of Ministry of Law and Justice in 2024.

In 2024, the Ministry of Law and Justice achieved several significant milestones:

Simultaneous Elections Initiative

A High-Level Committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind submitted an 18,626-page report on simultaneous elections to President Droupadi Murmu. The committee proposed a phased approach to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, Municipalities, and Panchayats.

Criminal Law Reforms

Three landmark criminal laws replaced colonial-era statutes in July 2024:

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 (replacing Indian Penal Code)

Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 (replacing Code of Criminal Procedure)

Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 (replacing Indian Evidence Act)

These new laws aim to modernize the legal system, emphasize justice over punishment, and introduce electronic trial mechanisms.

Digital Transformation

The Department launched the Notary Portal to streamline notarial services, allowing digital applications and certificates. They also introduced the Legal Information Management and Briefing System (LIMBS) for real-time court case tracking.

International Cooperation

India participated in the BRICS Ministers of Justice Meeting, highlighting legal reforms and discussing cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and human rights.
